Soldiers & Birds

September 16, 2014
Cottonwood Cove RV Park
Great Bend, Kansas

The day started out cold and cloudy, but turned into a very nice day spent visiting Ft. Larned and the Cheyenne Bottoms wetlands.

Ft Larned was built to provide protection for the Sante Fe Trail and later the railroad.

Most of the original stone fort is still there and in excellent condition.

Neither one of us are into birds, but we had heard about Cheyenne Bottoms so decided to give it a try.
It is the largest inland marsh in the country.

Almost half of all the shorebirds east of the Rockies stop at Cheyenne Bottoms to rest and refuel during their migrations.

It seems strange to find so many shorebirds and waterfowl in this rural area of Kansas.

It's too bad we weren't here at the correct season to see the Sandhill Cranes and Whopping Cranes.

Looking down on our truck from one of the observation platforms.
