Presidents, Cowboys and Greyhounds

September 14, 2014
Covered Wagon Campground
Abilene, Kansas

Yesterday we stopped off at the Homestead National Monument in Beatrice, NE on our way to Abilene, KS.

This center is built on the site of the first homestead to be filed in America under the Homestead Act of 1862.

The exhibits were very interesting and they even had a place to look up the homesteads of your ancestors.

You will notice that the sun is shining even though it was in the upper 30s when we left this morning.

In addition to all the cowboy history, Abilene is the home of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.  We have been to several presidential libraries and made it a point to save time for this one.

In addition to the museum and library, the center also gives tours of the Eisenhower home on its original site.  Dwight Eisenhower grew up in this house with his five brothers.

Next on our agenda was a stop at the Greyhound Hall of Fame.  We were met at the door by the two resident greyhounds, Jade and Gary.  After greet each visitor, they quickly went back to their naps.  We were told that Gary will eat anything in sight, but Jade is a very picky eater.  She will only swallow her pills if they come inside of Twinkies.

  1. I would love the Greyhound place. They are such couch potatoes.
